Supporting Our Young Readers: Upcoming Phonics Screening Check

Over the coming weeks, our Year 1 children, along with some Year 2 pupils, will be taking part in the national Phonics Screening Check. This is an important milestone in your child’s early reading journey, and we’d like to share what it involves and how you can support at home.

What is the Phonics Screening Check?

The Phonics Screening Check is a short, one-to-one assessment that takes place with your child’s teacher. It is designed to assess how well children can use their phonics skills to read words. The check consists of 40 words, a mix of real words and “alien” (nonsense) words, which help to ensure children are using decoding skills rather than relying on memory.

Who takes part?

  • All children in Year 1 will take the check.
  • Year 2 children who did not meet the expected standard in Year 1 will have another opportunity to take it this year.

Why is phonics important?

Phonics is a key building block for reading and writing. By learning to recognise sounds and blend them together, children gain the confidence and skills needed to tackle unfamiliar words and become fluent readers.

How can you help at home?

Your support makes a huge difference. Here are some simple ways to help:

  • Read regularly with your child and encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words.
  • Practise phonics sounds that your child has been learning in school.
  • Make it fun! Play word games, spot sounds in everyday life, and celebrate your child’s progress.
  • Stay positive – confidence is key, and encouragement goes a long way.

Reassurance for parents

The Phonics Screening Check is designed to be a gentle and supportive experience. Teachers carry it out in a familiar setting, and children are encouraged every step of the way. If a child does not meet the expected standard, they will continue to receive support and have the opportunity to retake the check the following year.

We are proud of the progress all our children make and are here to support them every step of the way. If you have any questions about the screening or how to help your child, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our children become confident, enthusiastic readers!
